The Santa Fe Business Incubator (SFBI) welcomes experienced business people to join our Council of Business Advisors (COBA) to work with the entrepreneurs of SFBI’s start-up companies, helping them to grow their businesses during the early critical years.  Volunteers work with our clients as Advisors, Subject Matter Experts (SME), Consultants or speakers at business workshops and seminars.

Advisor:

• At least five years as a full time management consultant with a history of continuous service to commercial clients OR at least two relevant management positions in entrepreneurial companies that combine to five years.
• Significant experience working with clients/companies on activities from business plan development through initial capital acquisition.
• Additional “hands-on” experience at for-profit corporations with management level responsibilities.
• At least three professional references from recent clients attesting to the quality and completeness of work performed.
• Educational and professional certification, accreditation or licensing credentials in an area related to the needs of SFBI clients.

Subject Matter Expert (SME):

That person possesses a deep knowledge of a particular aspect of business. Such knowledge could be functional, such as product design, marketing and sales, information technology or manufacturing quality assurance. It could also be technical in one or more related areas, for example, molecular diagnostics, kinematics or high energy lasers. Finally, it might be depth in a particular industry – organic chemicals, aerospace and defense, food ingredients.

The Expert would be on call. She or he would spend a certain amount of time at the incubator, learning about the client companies. With assistance from the staff, the Expert would be introduced to those companies where it would appear (or be known) that such professional presence and advice would be important to them. The Expert would also make presentations to all companies interested, perhaps once annually, to stimulate demand for services. Finally, the Expert would be invited and welcomed to general events at the SFBI both to learn, network and enjoy the relationship.

Consultant:

This person can be an advisor, SME and for fee consultant. The person would have specific functional consulting abilities to assist the client in a defined scope of work. The client and consultant would work together, to develop a defined plan, budget and timeline of a specific project.
Volunteer members of COBA are invited to attend SFBI networking events, client workshops, special Board events and celebrations. Volunteers should be willing to make a strong commitment to the Incubator program. Hours are flexible based on the needs of the client and the availability of the volunteer.
